"Remember that you also have a Master—in heaven" (Colossians 4:1b).
The New Testament often refers to us as "slaves" of the Lord Jesus Christ. Frankly, most of us have a difficult time understanding this concept because when we think of slavery, we have images of a whip on someone's back and terrible conditions of living. But slaves at the time of Christ were servants, many of whom lived in their master's house and were treated rather well.
The New Testament reminds us that we are Jesus' servants, so we must live to do what He commands us to do. A slave received his plans from his master and remained ever open, flexible, and obedient to his master's will. As Paul says, "Don't act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do" (Ephesians 5:17).
"As slaves of Christ, do the will of God with all your heart" (Ephesians 6:6b).
