Psalm 22:6 But I am a worm and not a man, A reproach of men and despised by the people.
David didn't compare himself to a worm for no reason. He was making a point. He is not worthy and brings nothing to the table in his salvation and in comparison to our holy and righteous God, he is nothing. David got it.
Paul got it too when he penned this in 1 Corinthians 1:
For consider your calling, brethren, that there were not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble; but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong, and the base things of the world and the despised God has chosen, the things that are not, so that He may nullify the things that are, so that no man may boast before God.
Look, God doesn't choose the good people to save. Jesus saves sinners who bring nothing to the table. If you have been in a place where you recognize that you are just but a worm, then God has shown you how you are a sinner in need of a savior. But if you are still in a place where you consider yourself saved because you are better than another, or some how "chief worm" because you are not quite as bad as someone else, then pray that God shows you your need for salvation in His Son.
Paul continued with this in 1 Corinthians 1: 30 But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption, so that, just as it is written, “Let him who boasts, boast in the Lord.”
Look whose doing got you saved.
David and Paul got it, do you?
