The word translated "faith" in verse 3, can be translated "faithfulness."
The two are inseparable. Faith always accompanies faithfulness and faithfulness always accompanies faith.
If a person claims to have faith, but doesn't live faithfully for the Lord and for His people, there is cause to pause and ask, "Is this real, saving faith?" Merely talking about faith is not an indicator someone really has faith.
James emphasized the importance of a balance of faith and works in a believer's life as a result of salvation. He says, "I can already hear one of you agreeing by saying, 'Sounds good. You take care of the faith department, I'll handle the works department.' Not so fast. You can no more show me your works apart from your faith than I can show you my faith apart from my works. Faith and works, works and faith, fit together hand in glove" (James 2:18, MSG). If someone has genuine faith in the Lord they will be walking, living in faith.
