So, faith is important because it gives us hope.
Faith is also important because it gives us understanding.
There have been hundreds of theories—but someone always finds a flaw in the theory.
The only way to understand the question of origins is to have faith in a Creator God.
Now, look at verse 3:
"By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible."
Genesis 1 provides the background for what he's saying here.
"In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth…. And God said, 'Let there be light,' and there was light" (Genesis 1:1,3, ESV).
The fact that God created the universe is a truth that can only be known by faith in the inspired revelation that God has given in the Bible.
The bedrock of our faith is in the creative power of God. (Genesis 1:1,3,6-7,9 as well as John 1:3).
The creation testifies of a Creator.
"The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands" (Psalm 19:1, NIV).
